Van Mahotsav

Van Mahotsav

Van Mahotsav is a tree planting week celebrated in the month of July from 1st to 7th of July. It was initiated in 1950 by K.M. Munshi, the then union agricultural minister to raise awareness for the conservation of forest and trees.

Van Mahotsav as the name suggests festival of trees or celebration of trees. Why do we celebrate a festival or celebrate something, when it has something to do with us, when it has some significance in our lives. According to me, an Mahotsav is not only to raise awareness for conservation of trees but also to make people understand their significance. Trees play a vital role for our environment and our existence. Trees most importantly provide us oxygen, they bring rain, reduce pollution, prevent abrupt raise in temperature, provide us fruits and vegetables and many other uncountable things.

Trees are an asset and we merely cut them down for our selfish purposes.

Imagine a situation where the natures takes back its revenge. How would it be like? Our body can sustain up to 60 degree Celsius but when all the trees die, they'll release a lot of carbon dioxide and now there would be no one to clear that up. Temperature would rise to a limitless extent. There wont be rain as frequent, floods would become very common and life would go extinct without oxygen. We must understand that the ecological balance between us and plants must be maintained.

Some indications of the upcoming situation can be seen today. There are abrupt rainfalls, the temperature isn’t fixed for a particular season, the winters are not as they were few years back, the pollution level in Delhi is very high, even the air at times isn't clear.

We are a technologically developed world and we can find alternate solutions instead of cutting trees. The chopping down of forests cannot fully be eliminated but it can be reduced to an extent.

We all must understand the significance of trees and the nature before we lose the chance to reclaim it. We must not look at the small benefits rather think for the future generation and the greater consequences of destroying the nature.
